I know so little about running 100 miles. Things I do know:
- My training mileage has been ridiculously low at about 30 miles per week. It's too late to increase training meaningfully without getting injured. (Has anyone finished a 100 mile race on such a low amount of training?)
- I know the course up to mile 75. I hope to get onto the last 25 miles this weekend.
Things I don't know:
- I don't know any ultra runners who can pace me. I know some ultra people on Twitter, but not well enough to ask - besides, most ultra peeps I know are running it themselves.
- I don't know what information to tell my pacers. My pacers are my brother and two of my best mates; all are very good runners - but they run on the roads, and not more than half marathon. Not sure how to transform them into trail ultra pacers in the space of three weeks.
- I don't know how to organise pacers to meet me during the second half of the race. How does a pacer get to the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night without adequate public transport or a car? All great questions. I hope they can figure it out.
- I don't know what it feels like to run more than 50 miles. I'm starting to feel like a 100k before a 100 miler would have been a good idea.
- I don't know what sleep deprivation while running feels like. I haven't done any night time training runs. (I'm hoping that my 1 year old daughter has trained me adequately in sleep deprivation over the past year.)
- I don't know how to run with a head torch in the dark. I don't even own a proper head torch yet - I have a cheap Duracell one that I got for free when I bought a bike.
- I don't own a backpack yet that will fit all the gear I need. I usually run with a bum bag. I still need to buy other essential gear for the race (shorts with a pocket, toe socks without holes, gloves, NDW map and more.)
Oh golly.
